Is Going to Outdoor Lab Worth It?

Everyone who’s been a junior in high school knows that the workload is hard. There seems to be no end to the amount of work required to manage decent grades. A factor that can make school more difficult and make the workload harder is missing school.

If you get sick and have to miss a day it is manageable to make up what you missed, but what if you had to miss an entire week of school voluntarily? Most people would turn this down because of the amount work they would have to make up. Some would love to escape school to have a week filled with unforgettable memories.

“It was worth it for the experience of being away from social media. The homework was the only difficult part, but after I was all caught up, I can say I’d definitely do it again,” said Joe Sullivan (11). Even with the amount of work he had to make up, it was still worth it to be away from the black hole that is social media.

“Outdoor lab was totally worth it, the kids were amazing and the experience was truly extraordinary. The make up work was tough but I would definitely say that it was worth it,” said Brayden Rhoades (11). Being able to help these students and have them learn from people they will be in 5 years is invaluable.

Going through this week long experience doesn’t only affect outdoor lab leaders. It also affects the students they watch over. They look at them as role models and as people they want to be like when they’re older. “The feeling of knowing that I impacted those kids for the rest of their lives is something I’ve never felt before. It was by far one of the best things I’ve ever done,” Maddy Bond (11).

Going to this week long camp to help and teach elementary school kids is definitely a risk worth consideration. Although the amount of work you have to make up is substantial, it is an experience that will live in your memory forever, and something many wouldn’t regret doing.
