DRHS counselor Karina Wilson presented Outdoor Lab information to interested students. “Outdoor lab can be a life-changing experience for middle school and high school students,” Wilson said.

Dakota Ridge counselors hosted an Outdoor Lab leader meeting on October 22. Counselors Karina Wilson and Kirsten Link presented application and other information to help students decide on potential involvement with this annual activity.  High school students could become sixth-grade lab leaders in 2020.

Labs will take place at Windy Peak or Mt. Evans for one week. Outdoor Lab could be a lifelong memory that allows members to work as a team, participate in the programs, and get involved in making a difference. Those interested should fill out an application due Dec. 18.

Since this would be a week-long journey, counselors suggest staying on top of studies, assignments, and tests/quizzes prior to leaving for the lab. Although that can be a lot of work, counselors say the dedication could be worth it.  “Making relationships and needing enough energy to take charge of the sixth graders has a big impact,” Wilson said.

Lessons learned in Outdoor Lab include those about different types of science in which high school students will do the teaching.  Student leaders also facilitate team building and hiking activities. Wilson said communication is key. It’s a “big responsibility — building relationships — and seeing the excitement on kids who come back from the experience.”

If you love helping young kids, this might be the experience for you. Visit the Dakota Ridge website for more information.
