The Dakota Ridge theater department hosted their first improv show on October 27th, at 7:00 p.m. Theater teacher James Young sponsored the event to teach students how to become improv actors.
Improv is a theater form where actors learn how to listen well, think on their feet, and be in the moment. When preparing for improv, the main skills learned are interaction games that will be performed as well as the structures of improv in general.
”The improv show brings our best actors and allows them to express different parts of their skills,” junior Emily Friesen said.
The hardest part about teaching/learning improv, according to Young, is learning to listen to others around you and being ready for anything.
Young said that the recent show went well. There was a positive and good crowd, and the actors did a great job, especially for being beginners in this form of theater.
”It was a really funny show,” freshman London Anderson said. “I love how they brought up kids (from the audience) to act, and I loved how they used the stage, and the games they played were fun.”
Improv is an activity that will continue throughout the school year.
“It’s fun, it’s fast, it’s for everyone,” Young said. “Come and join our improv group.”
