DRHS is only weeks away from graduation, and looking back at all the seniors that have left a legacy through their four years, one of them happens to be Alijah Sawyer.
Sawyer played an important role at DRHS as a member of the basketball team. Throughout the years, he has been considered one of the Eagles’ top varsity players. Sawyer started off strong this season — he and his team won every single game right up until the big one at the Denver Coliseum for the great 8 teams, but unfortunately took a loss. The Eagles gave it their all, and Sawyer played a significant role in all the games. Sawyer believes his team pushes him to do his best and to show up for them.
“Alijah is a tenacious defender and a great teammate, and I respect his resilience” team member Nick Hubert said.
Sawyer has played basketball for eight years including high school, middle school, and a little before. Sawyer even got a job refereeing junior basketball games because he loves all aspects of the sport. His passion for basketball has always been strong, and he loves the sport because it challenges him, and he loves the competitiveness. Sawyer says he’s always been close with his teammates, especially in high school.
“Me and the team always go and play pool after every practice, it’s fun,” Sawyer said.
Sawyer has completed 21 games this season, with an average 4.0 points scored for the season, as well as a 2.1 rebound per game.
Although Sawyer loves basketball, he says it will not be in his future. He has plans to become a pilot, or work with planes in general. He has been attending Warren Tech’s aviation program for the past two years, working with planes and flying them to get more experience.
Sawyer has put in a lot of effort into his passions and hopes to continue everything he loves once he graduations in May.
