Lost in Yonkers is the latest school play that will be performed by DRHS theater students on November 14, 15 and 16, 2024.
DRHS senior Sofia Scibetta will perform the part of Grandma Kurniz in the play.
“I am very excited,” Scibetta said, “This is my first ever time in theater.”
The main characters and their roles include Jay Kurnitz played by Ryan Vineyard, Arty Kurnitz played by Liv Walsh, Bella Kurnitz played by Callie Glider-Wood, Grandma Kurnitz played by Sophia Scibetta, Louie Kurnitz played by Madison Smay, Eddie Kurnitz played by Heidi Squillace, and Gert Kurnitz played by Jaycee Ferro.
Actors aren’t the only ones who make up the show, though. There are also backstage crew members such as the creative team, the understudy cast, head of costumes, head of lights, head of makeup, head of props, and head of sound. James Young, the director and theater teacher, leads the production.
Lost in Yonkers was written by American playwright Neil Simon and premiered in 1991. The themes of the play can best be summarized by abbreviated childhood, war, and generational trauma. Conflicts within the story include moving in with new family, money problems, and dealing with death.
Lost in Yonkers won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama when it premiered and a Tony award for Best Play.
“The whole play is really just about family dynamics and getting along with other people, despite their own issues, and it’s important to remember that each character has gone through different experiences,” Scibetta said.
